%Z 3.11.99 - WRITING ON L.I.P. BASINFortified hilltop sites- Hyslop emphasizes the settlement focus for the fortified pukaras. In this model the low lakeside sites were abandoned in favor of the higher,fortified sites in the hills that ring the lake, although some lakeside Altiplano sites continued to be occupied (p5)- IMPORTANT FIND: in Juli-Pomota survey discovered that most sites during the Altiplano period were not fortified.- also, that many of the fortified sites were, in fact, not permanently occupied.- excavations by de la Vega (1990) at the huge pukara outside of Juli demonstr. that most of the domestic terrace areas were not permanently occupied.- Likewise, a sample of a number of non-habitation structures (storage?) indicated they were used only sporadically (de la Vega). Dad sugg. that many of the pukaras were temporary 'refuge' sites utilized in times of danger. - Largest of these pukaras had subst. villages and hamlets around their base. (p5)Aymara migration- hypothesized migration of Aymara speakers - one of the major questions facing the Titicaca basin for the post-Tiw period. (p118)- substantial change in settlement patterns in the tiw/alti period transition that could be explained this way.- These data - also explained by dramatic political disruptions coincident w/ Tiw collapse.- also: drought around AD1000 might explain these settlement changes - particularly the nucleated settlements near raised fields to the more dispersed pattern founded on camelid herding.- southern area sites are not fortified.- fort. of settlements in region correlates w/ demographically dense areas near lake... supports models of internecine strife as opposed to a model of migrants moving into the rgion in fort. settlements (p118)- Kelluyo ceramic types are distinct from the immediate Lake types.... doesn't support Aymara movement south in wake of Tiw collapse.
