Week 9 - Anisotropic cost surfaces and Least-cost paths

Week 9 - Anisotropic Cost surfaces

Introduction: Non-Cartesian Distance Units
Spatial analysis in anthropology is frequently based on Cartesian coordinates that describe space in terms of regular units on a grid coordinate system. The UTM system is a good example of a Cartesian coordinate system in metric units. GIS permits the calculation of distance costs in terms of non Cartesian units that, some have argued, are a better reflection of real perspectives and human (agent) decision-making.

About using this course material in your class

A couple of instructors have written about using the course material and labs in their courses.

I welcome the use of these materials in your class, but with attribution. It is great to see more inventive uses of GIS in anthropological research.

I ask that you please send email letting me know that you're planning to use these material with a link to the class, and that if you have suggestions or if you find errors then please let me know.

iTrek Z1 GPS datalogger precision test

The iTrek Z1 datalogger GPS with a solar panel is based on the MTK chipset produced beginning in Q1 2007. I brought this GPS data logger, along with three other GPS units, on an ethnoarchaeological research project in Peru in 2007 where we travelled with a traditional salt-bearing caravan for 14 days, and I gathered 9 days of data logging with the iTrek Z1. I conducted this test to evaluate the precision of the GPS in the southern hemiphere where there is no WAAS.

Finding the right transformation when re-projecting data in ArcGIS 9.2

So you're using the Project Tool to re-projecting a map into a new projection.

Before you can start the process, you have to choose from the many transformations. The attached file (World Projections.xls) lists where in the world each projection transformation should be used.

Cartographic transformations in ArcGIS for South America

ArcGIS offers a number of geographic transformations between coordinates in the older Prov South American Datum of 1956 (PSAD56) and the modern WGS 1984 datum.

Finding the PSAD1956 datum in ArcGIS

The PSAD1956 datum is supported in ArcGIS. The coordinate system settings are found under Coordinate System menus under UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator)

Predefined > Projected Coordinates > UTM > Other GCS > Prov. S. Amer Datum, UTM Zone X (Northern or Southern hemisphere).
